"UP" Movie Review

Pixar does it again.  The imagination coming out of this shop is just fantastic.  I took my daughter to see UP 3D and she kept trying to touch the screen.  So amazing to watch.  I can't say much about it but just that it is worth seeing.  Taking whole family to see again tomorrow.

Up, Up and Away.

MagCloud, HP

HP launches new beta sight MagCloud that promises to bring printing costs down for the Magazine business.  Claims are that you load a PDF, the magazines are printed made to order at a fraction of the cost.  Sounds like an idea that might work.  I see it run into problems for real magazines that have special features for key advertisers unless HP can allow you to specify that.  But if the costs are reduced you can give that favorite advertiser more space or something new will come to take the place of inserts and the like.

Angels and Demons Review

Ron Howard's follow up film of Dan Brown's book Angels and Demons reunites us with Symbologist Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) who has to save Rome from Biblical annihilation in 8 Hours.  No Problem.  A&D has all the usual bells and whistles.  It's a fun ride and the energy from newcomer Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zuer) is refreshing.  If your looking for anything other than summer popcorn fun you might be disappointed.  But,  ease expectation and you'll have a fun ride.  This film swells in all the right places and has many fun twists and turns that remind you of a James Bond film.

It has more of a National Treasure feeling when it comes to Biblical fact compared to the first film.  The Da Vinci Code dealt with a much more volatile subject.  This version steers clear of any such potential conflicts and takes a safe road of a straight thriller.

New Princess and the Frog Trailer

Madea in Space???

If you have been under a rock and have not seen Star Trek yet.  Tyler Perry has a special cameo as Admiral Richard Barnett of Star Fleet.  Can't miss him. And there is no truth to the rumor of a Madea in Space, sorry.  Was this a cheap ploy to lure people to the theater.  Is Admiral Richard Barnett the new Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams)?  Well from several interviews it appears that JJ Abrams respects and admires Perry and wanted him in the film.  That's all.

Did Star Trek Miss Women

Star Trek opening this past weekend to $75 Million.  Slightly less than expectation and $10 Million less than Wolverine with week before.  Some are scratching their heads behind the wondering what may have been the difference for the softer opening.  It is believed that Paramount may have missed the boat on Women.  Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) while clearly a guy film had a hunk in the lead that had a female following.  While Star Trek on the other hand had a crop of stars that were unknown and the ensemble was pushed more than the young Kirk (Chris Pine).  It is believed that ST will fare better over time given it's strong reviews and possible repeat business.

Wolverine Review

This review is a little late in coming but alas here it is.  Wolverine I am sad to say has an itch that it just can't scratch.  All the ingredients are there, but it just doesn't leave you with that mmmmmm good feeling.  For almost a week I have been trying to put my finger on it and I think it falls into the same trap that Watchmen fell into.  They try to pack everything into the film.  Almost to satisfy die hard comic purist at the expense of a good film.

It's as if they did the film by checking off boxes rather than by making a movie.  There were too many cooks in the kitchen and the belief is that the formula is too good to fail.  Underneath all great comics is a love story and the love story with Kayla Silverfox (Lynn Collins) is never fully developed between her and Wolverine.  So when tragic things happen we just don't seem to care.  The film is more of a Bro-love story between two brothers. Liev Schreiber is a good Sabertooth.  I know the heavens are going to open up on this but...I did not care for Hugh Jackman as Wolverine.  I want someone who's off screen presence would fit.  Hugh looks the part, but something is missing.  Also I think Wolverine needed a side kick to add some comic relief.  There is no humor in the film.  In the way that characters play off of Hellboy's temper.  A guy with a short fuse whose always ready to blow.  Such seriousness all through Wolverine caused it to be melodramatic.

Now about the score.  It just did not do it's job properly.  There was never a memorable theme and that's critical to pulling in the audience.

Its very sad to see such a great potential lost and these big comic films have to be very careful not to fall for their own hype.  Story, story, story.  We lets hope Star Trek makes up for it.  Live Long and Prosperous. \\//.
